Field Training Unit

A Message from FTO Unit Commander…

Welcome to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) Field Training Unit page.  If you are a future applicant, current candidate, or certified officer looking for a rewarding career with PBSO, we are glad you visited our page.  My staff in the Field Training Unit consists of Sergeant Karl Martin – Law Enforcement FTO Coordinator, Sergeant Rechina Castro – Corrections FTO Coordinator, Wendy Victorero – Office Manager, and Sydney Plant – Office Support Staff.  We are a section of the Training Division led by Captain Todd Baer.

The Field Training Office is responsible for providing the highest quality approved training to newly hired law enforcement and correctional officers, whether they are academy graduates or certified officers with prior experience. We hold a New Hire Academy four times a year which consists of classroom training and high liability training (Phase 1). This portion of training covers all high liability areas designated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), all in-house agency rules, regulations and policies, and methodologies of how work is done at PBSO. After successful completion of Phase 1, you will enter into field training (Phase 2). The FTO is the trainees’ guide, mentor, and evaluator throughout the training to ensure a successful completion of the Academy. You must perform at an acceptable level in accordance with the Standard Evaluation Guidelines (SEG) contained in the Field Training Guide (FTG) for successful completion of Phase 2. After completion of Phase 2, you will receive your assignment.

The Field Training Office is also responsible for Academy Recruits, Cadets, College Internships, training civilian Community Service Aides (CSA), training civilian Corrections Support Personnel (CSP), promotional field training, patrol re-entry training (PRP), performance improvement training (PIP) and the Supervisor’s Academy. The Field Training Office prepares roll call training briefs (RCTB) for the agency and assists in the creation of training manuals, lesson plans, and daily evaluation reports. Palm Beach County has multiple training districts and two Detention Centers (Main and West).

The FTO Unit is committed to providing the best training possible to ensure the new hires who enter into a career in law enforcement and corrections at PBSO are ready to keep the citizens of Palm Beach County safe. Our unique group of fully certified New Hire instructors and Corporals are passionate and dedicated to providing exceptional training to the program.

Sincerely,

Lieutenant Krystal Gornall
